What a fantastic start to the season! It’s been great to see all our players back on court, along with welcoming so many new families to the Sunnybank Saints community 👏
This week we’re kicking off our weekly learning series — helping everyone build confidence and understanding of the game. From a fun look at netball’s history, to key rules like footwork, plus tips for our NetSetGO players and an umpiring reminder around obstruction — there’s something for everyone!
These small reminders go a long way in helping our players grow, play safely, and enjoy their netball each week 😊
A big thank you to our coaches, managers, umpires, and families for your ongoing support — we couldn’t do it without you!
Let’s keep the energy going into Week 2 💪
Fun Fact of the Week
Did you know that netball actually started way back in 1895? It was originally called “women’s basketball” and has grown into a fast-paced, skilful sport played by millions of people around the world today! Even cooler… netball is especially popular right here in Australia, where it’s one of the leading sports for girls and women. Go Saints!
Rule of the Week - Footwork
One of the most important (and sometimes tricky!) rules in netball is footwork. Here’s a simple way to remember it: When you catch the ball, the first foot that lands becomes your landing foot You can pivot on that foot, but you can’t step or drag it. If you move it incorrectly, it’s called stepping, and the other team gets a free pass.
Tip: Think “catch, land, pivot!” — practicing this will really help your game improve.
NetSetGO Tip - Holding the ball
When you catch the ball in netball, you have 3 seconds to pass or shoot. If you hold onto it for too long, it’s called holding the ball and the other team gets a free pass.
NetSetGO Tip
✔️ Look for your teammates early
✔️ Stay calm under pressure
✔️ Pass before the 3 seconds is up!
Umpire's Corner - Obstruction
In netball, defenders must stand at least 0.9 metres away from the player with the ball. If you get too close while defending, it’s called obstruction and the other team receives a penalty.
Easy Way to Remember It
✔️ One big step away
✔️ Hands up is okay — as long as you keep your distance
❌ Don’t crowd or lean over the player with the ball
Saints Tip
Great defence comes from good positioning, quick footwork and smart pressure — not standing too close!
Go Saints!
We can’t wait to see all our Saints players out on the court again next week. Good luck to every team — play hard, have fun, and represent Saints with pride!
Remember that netball is not just about winning—it’s about teamwork, learning new skills, and having fun with your teammates. Encourage each other, listen to your coaches, and always play with great sportsmanship.
